Appealing Glass Tile: Wonderful For Your House

Budge over ceramic tile, there’s a recent top dog in home tiling endeavors. Like moths to an open flame, more and more people are seeking and using glass tiles for their several tiling undertakings for the kitchen, bathroom, floors, walls or swimming pools. Glass tiles are more popular because they bring intensity, grace, liquid character and luminescence to every surface they are mounted in. Although glass tiles are more expensive than ceramic tiles, patrons make sure to create a sensible budget to include them because they adore its artistic and handcrafted allure that is surely worth all the price. Take some time to browse my mosaic tiles guide.

The loved glass tile takes form in various shapes and colors. This is depending on the numerous process which are used to generate them. For example, other glass tiles are cut and cold-cooled. In this type of cold manufacturing, no heat is used, just the cutting of the glass. Other glass tiles are made by liquefying, casting and then cooling them. In this type of glass tile manufacturing, sand and chemicals are blended, melted into a tank and cooled in trays to create cast glass. The end result of both types of manufacturing is the noticeable dissimilarity in size, color, appearance, thickness and shape. Some glass tiles even contain minute bubbles within the tile which creates a wet look. Glass tiles manufactures say that glass tiles are like snowflakes: each is one of a kind. The versatility and variety of glass tiles allow contractors and DIYers continuous customization for their projects.

Some glass tile doubters are hesistant about its toughness. They stress that glass tiles are, well, glass: breakable and breakable. But in truth, glass tiles are indeed sturdy, long lasting and strong as ceramic tiles are. Glass tiles have, in fact, some advantages over ceramic tiles. More hard-wearing than ceramic tiles, glass tiles are non-porous so it does not absorb water or moisture. Therefore, unlike the ceramic tiles, they are not affected by mold or mildew if installed accurately.

Setting up glass tiles are not that dissimilar with ceramic tile installation. Though some tile installers might get a bit hung-up with glass cutting but generally, installation is pretty much straightforward and easy. Glass tiles are installed by setting the glass unto the work surface. The thinnest used in application is usually white since glass tiles are transparent. This is to maintain a clean and clear background that won’t affect the glass color.

Many home improvement and tile websites offer a variety of glass tiles that would be right for your home. There are matte, iridescent, and glossy types of glass tile. More and more DIYer’s favor using the mosaic glass tiles because they can easily merger and fit the pattern compared when using large field glass tiles. Other artistically inclined homeowners even create murals from these mosaic glass tiles to further revamp their homes. Want to make your home greener? Purchase recycled glass tiles. These glass tiles are made from almost ninety percent of recycled glass from bottles and such. Recycled glass tiles are extremely beautiful and colorful.

Appreciating the negative consequences of bankruptcy

Bankruptcy can be painful, and you may not be the only one who is hurt by it. Before you file, you need to examine things closely so you can make the best decision possible for you and your family. In this article we will discuss some of the drawbacks of filing personal bankruptcy.

The most obvious negative consequence of declaring bankruptcy is the damage that it will do to your credit rating. Of course, this may not be the most pressing thought in your mind, because your finances may be so bad that your credit rating really doesn’t matter at the moment.

Still, you have to think about the difficulties you’ll face in getting credit during the next few years. When you are given a loan, you’ll probably have to pay higher interest rates for some time.

You have to be careful about accumulating debt all over again anyway, but you should still be aware of the damage to your credit.

One consequence you may not have thought of is that innocent creditors will be hurt by your decision. We’re not just talking about huge corporations but also any small businesses that have extended you credit recently. This may be especially hard to take for the small businesses, but you should still not make a decision solely on this factor. You need to do what is best for you and your family.

Another thing that people worry about is their reputations. Certainly, life after bankruptcy will hurt your reputation in some circles, especially if you live in a small community where everyone knows everything about you.

You may even have your name published on a bankruptcy list in some newspaper, and your bankruptcy filing will also be a matter of public record for those who are interested.

Nevertheless, this is not usually a big deal especially in larger communities. The public can attend your bankruptcy meeting, but few people are ever interested in this.

Mexico City - a Heady Mix of Chaos and Beauty

Endless lines of vehicles wind their way along the broad avenues, filling the air with exhaust. Mexico City appears unconcerned. At first glance, visitors may be overwhelmed by Mexico City’s noise, dirt and chaos, but look again.

Mexico City is the largest metropolis on the American continent and it is still growing. Despite the problems that inevitably accompany unrestrained growth, there are superb architectural treasures hidden behind the rather dull facades of this huge city.

No other Latin American city boasts as many baroque churches, monasteries and colonial palaces. It also has a number of acclaimed modern buildings, some of which are decorated with monumental paintings by the famous Mexican muralists, and world-class museums house still more art and treasure.

The eagle, the snake and the cactus.
In 1325, the Aztecs, who called themselves the Mexica, migrated into what is now central Mexico, where they founded their capital city, Tenochtitlan. They had chosen the site well, with a little help. According to legend, the Aztecs received a vision that told them to wander until they found an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its talons.

In the Valley of Mexico at an elevation of more than 2,000 metres they came upon this very scene in a swampy area scattered with lakes and islands. From a strategic standpoint, the location was ideal. They colonized the islands in the middle of a shallow lake, which protected their settlement well. The wandering Mexica had finally settled down.

Later, they built dams and causeways between the islands, which developed into a complex hydraulic system with canals, drawbridges and sluices. Tenochtittan grew in size to cover more than 13 square kilometres. The Aztecs ultimately conquered the entire high valley by force of arms, and soon controlled nearly all of modern-day Mexico, as well as other parts of Central America.

Hernan Cortes and the Fall of the Empire
The precipitous fall of the Aztec Empire began in 1519 when Hernan Cortes landed on the Gulf Coast of Mexico with just a few men. What Cartes achieved is incredible. With a small force, a few horses and indomitable will, not to mention a good dose of brutality and recklessness, he subdued an entire empire. His total command consisted of 500 Spanish soldiers, 16 mounted fighters, 6 cannons and 400 Indian mercenaries. The Aztec population he confronted numbered in the hundreds of thousands.

On 8 November 1519 the Aztecs’ fate was sealed. The Aztec ruler Moctezuma II received Cortes unarmed, possibly because he thought Cortes was the god Quetzalcoatl. This was an invitation to disaster. The Spaniards quickly took Moctezuma hostage and massacred the assembled priests and nobles.

The Aztecs were at first able to push back the interlopers and force them to retreat. Unfortunately, this only postponed their demise by a few years. In 1521, Cortes moved in with fresh troops, completely overwhelming the Aztec forces. The Spanish rulers then built their own city with churches and palaces on the foundations of the old one. Most of the lake was drained, as more and more land was needed. Tenochtitlan disappeared under a Spanish city. Parts of it, such as the Tempio Major, have since been excavated by archaeologists and are on view again after hundreds of years of obscurity.

A great present idea for your friends is a periodical subscription

A periodical subscription is a great way to get your favorite journal on a regular basis. Nowadays it is possible to buy magazines and newspapers online. Doing so will help the customer to get their periodical right after it has been published. Magazines can be very nice presents, and most vendors offer special gift subscriptions. If you are interested in German newspapers and periodicals, the following site reviews some important online suppliers of gift subscriptions: Zeitschrift Geliebte Katze Geschenkabo.

What are the advantages of subscribing to your favorite periodical instead of buying it each time it is published, and what are some special rules for ordering German journal subscriptions?

Most online suppliers of magazines offer special gift subscriptions. These are a very good idea for everybody who is looking for a nice birthday or wedding present. It is important to know that the bonuses coming with a new subscription normally cannot be taken by the new subscribers themselves but by the person who recommended the new reader. So it is useful to order the new subscription together with a friend or family member. One plays the role of the new subscriber and the other one gets the gift. There are vendors who offer subscriptions without minimum duration. These can be cancelled at any time or can be switched over to another magazine title. However these non minimum duration subscriptions do not come with valuable gifts.

Virtually any newspaper or magazine can be ordered on the internet. So everybody should be able to find their favorite one quickly and easily. A periodical subscription without minimum duration can be used as a present itself. If you have chosen the wrong journal and the presentee does not like the specific magazine you can cancel the subscription or switch over to another one. You can quickly choose your favorite journal - for instance this one: Zeitschrift Neue Welt Geschenkabo - and buy it online in no time. The subscriptions normally come with some very nice benefits. You can get valuable bonuses like money, gift vouchers or electronic devices. These bonuses are often worth several months of the subscription rate.

Finding A Home Treatment For Kidney Stones

Suffering with kidney stones can be what seems like a miserable existence, so finding a home treatment for kidney stones should not be! There are literally hundreds of home remedies and overnight cures for dissolving kidney stones online, so how can you decide which ones will work best for you?

Finding the right home treatment for kidney stones requires knowing how you and your body functions. From your daily excercise routines (if any) to your personal diet, it is important to know where your body stands and what might be causing your problem. All people are different so its only right that there are a variety of ways to heal illnesses. By knowing your body, you stand a better chance of finding the home treatment that’s right for you.

Most of the time finding a natural cure for kidney stones requires knowing more about the problem itself. If your problem is severe, seeking a doctor’s advice and/or assistance is always the best route. Do not put your health in danger just for the sake of saving a few bucks or fear of what your doctor may find.

80% of people suffering from kidney stones are eligible for a home treatment that is not only natural, but painless as well! So how do you know if you are in this 80%? Here are a few guidelines for a proven home treatment:

  • Your Kidney Stones Are Made Of Calcium Oxalate (You may not know what yours are made of, but Calcium Oxalate represent over 85% of this affliction. They are by far the most common type of kidney stone.)
  • Your kidney stones are 7mm or less (over 90% of kidney stones are 5mm or less!) A good analogy is this: a big block of ice takes longer to melt than a bag of ice cubes. Should they be larger than the 7mm, the home treatment may still work, but may require a “rinse and repeat” of sorts.
  • You have just one or two kidney stones — Again, a bag of ice will always take longer to melt than one or two cubes. If this is this case, this home treatment might not work for you and a doctor’s advce is needed.
  •

If you believe you are in the 80%, then I have the home treatment for you! It can work for you in less than 24 hours and will help prevent the problem from happening again! If you would like to read more, check out my home treatment for kidney stones report.

The Evolution of the Bathroom Mirror

    Introduction

Central to the mythology of mirrors is Narcissus a Boeotian hero, who disliked those who loved him for his own natural beauty. He famously gazed into a pool of water and was so fascinated with the reflection, that he was unable to bring himself to leave the image. Not realising that the image he could see was of his own natural beauty, he couldn’t bring himself to leave the image, and he perished.

The concept of how the mirror works is quite simple. It stems simply from the reflective surface of still water and therefore nature plays its part. When you look down into a puddle or a dark pool of water, the smooth water reflects the light straight back into your eyes.

Mirrors work in exactly the same way, in that a mirror is made up of a coated glass surface which when a polished metal surface or metal film is applied behind the glass, light cannot shine through and so reflects the image back. Young children particularly, are always fascinated when they look into a mirror for the first time and see their own reflection staring back at them. Anyone who has young children will remember the vision of their young son kissing their image on a mirror. My eight year old daughter loves sitting in front of her mirror doing her hair nearly as much as my fifteen year old daughter!

Where would we be today without mirrors? Mirrors are generally used for personal grooming or interior decoration and have developed from a luxury item into a necessity. There is an enormous variety of mirror shapes and sizes and over the years, mirrors have gradually evolved to meet many different requirements. Today there is a large selection of mirrors to suit every requirement, ranging from small mirrors to large mirrors, framed, unframed and includes bathroom mirrors, decorative mirrors, illuminated mirrors, LED mirrors, shaving mirrors, compact mirrors and demister mirrors.

Away from personal use, mirrors are also used as part of scientific apparatus such as cameras, lasers, telescopes and periscopes, to reflect light and used as tools in dentistry and medical care. Not to mention the beauty and hair salon industries.

    History of Mirrors

The history of mirrors as far as we can see dates back over 8,000 years. The earliest known mirrors were made from pieces of polished stone such as obsidian, a naturally occurring glass from cooled volcanic lava flows. In Anatolia in Turkey, examples of obsidian mirrors dated at around 6000 BC have been found. In south and central America, polished stone mirrors from around 2000 BC on wards have also been found. From around 3000 BC mirrors of polished copper are known to have been crafted in ancient Egypt.

The first metal coated glass mirrors are thought to have been made in the first century AD, in Sidon, known today as Lebanon. The Roman author Pliny makes reference to glass mirrors backed with gold leaf in his Naturalis Historia, one of the largest reference books to have survived from the Roman Empire, which focused on natural and man-made objects and was written in around 77 AD.

In the 10th Century Arabian Physicists, considered different types of mirrors, reflecting mirrors and parabolic mirrors and another discussed concave and convex mirrors in both cylindrical and spherical geometries. In undertaking various experiments with mirrors, finding the point on a convex mirror at which a ray of light coming from one point is reflected to another point was solved.

During the period of the 14th to 17th Centuries, across Europe a method of coating glass with a tin-mercury amalgam was perfected by manufacturers. Venice was recognised for its glass making expertise and soon became a centre of mirror production using this new technique. Glass mirrors from this period were extremely expensive luxuries. Manufacturers also evolved in London, France and Germany.

The particular process of silvering to produce the first silvered-glass mirror is credited to German chemist Justus von Liebig in 1835. He developed a process to apply a thin layer of metallic silver onto glass through the chemical reduction of silver nitrate. The process was adapted for mass production and led to the greater availability of affordable mirrors.

The evolution of the mirror over the years is quite interesting, if like me you love mirrors! It has evolved from a luxury item to an item which is now taken for granted in daily use. Today, walk into any shop to look at mirrors and the selection is vast, with many technology features now finding there way into mirrors, to give added simplicity, luxury and decoration.

Back lit mirrors, LED lights and demister pads are fast becoming affordable items, you can also make your bathroom unique and give it that extra special luxury feel with new ranges of bathroom lighting.

    How are Mirrors Made?

The manufacture of mirrors includes the application to a suitable material of a reflective coating. Glass is the most common material, due to its ability to take a smooth finish and its rigidity. Glass is also more scratch resistant than many other materials previously used for making mirrors.

Early mirrors were made of solid metal, bronze or silver and they were far too expensive for most to be able to afford. Metal is also prone to corrosion and because of polished metal’s low emissivity, antique mirrors were less suitable for indoor use. With indoor lighting at the time supplied by candles or lanterns, the metal mirrors reflected a much darker picture.

In modern times ‘float glass’ is used in the manufacture of mirrors, which is a flat ribbon of glass which is run out of a furnace and along the surface of a bath of molten tin. The temperature of both the glass and molten tin is controlled to enable both surfaces to be made perfectly flat. There are now three common types of mirrors: plain - which has a flat surface, and the two spherical types of mirrors: the convex and the concave. The concave and convex mirrors can be used in an entertaining way, when used at fairgrounds or amusement parks to distort peoples figures reflected in them through bloating, stretching and shrinking, the person or object in front of them.

In some applications, a mirror isn’t a mirror at all. For example, when used in public conveniences, particularly in public or factory toilets, where for reasons of cost and the need for greater durability, a single polished metal sheet is often installed as a form of mirror.

    Different Types of Mirror

Throughout the ages, mirrors have been employed as symbols of truth, deception and vanity. Mention a mirror and you instantly know that if you look into one, you will see your own reflection staring back at you. The image you see will resemble your own appearance. In optical principles, the reflections in mirrors do not totally match the objects in front of them. When looking into the mirror, trace the contour of the reflection of your head in a mirror. The reflection may correspond in proportion, but will generally be half in actual size.
With such a variety and huge range of mirrors now available, much has been made of the amount of money spent in purchasing mirrors especially by women, although in this day and age with an increase in men purchasing cosmetics, some men will also be vain enough to carry a mirror.

The vain Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs famously asked her special mirror, “Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” Mirrors are synonymous with truth.
Mirrors are frequently used in interior decoration to create an illusion of space, and to decorate and amplify the apparent size of a room. They will be used around the home, the office, a pub, club or restaurant to good effect. They work particularly well in night clubs, reflecting the many images of light in the club or room to create a feeling of a much bigger space.

Infinity Mirrors provide an effect of never reaching an end, known as ‘infinity breaking’ and are particularly effective when used in a dark environment. I remember experiencing this phenomenon for the first time as a child in a large department store lift, where mirrors where on all sides of the elevator car. For those who are not good in lifts I should think this effect probably does nothing to calm them, perhaps that’s why you don’t see lifts like this anymore Or is it just because I’m getting old and that was a particular style popular in the 70’s!

My next favourite kind of mirror after the infinity mirror is the heated mirror, these mirrors have a heating element or what is called a demister pad mounted on the back. The reason a mirror steams up when you have a shower is because the surface temperature of the mirror is colder than the air temperature and causes the water vapour in the air to condense on the mirror. Some bright spark realised long ago that it if you heated the mirror this would avoid it steaming up, brilliant!

For many years heated mirrors have only featured in very expensive bathrooms usually costing thousands, and quality hotels have used heated mirrors as a neat differentiator from the increasingly popular budget hotels and motels. Of course it is not until you step out of the hotel shower and see yourself in the mirror that you realise it is there! Whilst at the back of your mind you realise this is one of the reasons why this room is more expensive than the other hotel across the street.

Last week I heard the BBC Radio 2 DJ Ken Bruce state that the best shave you ever had will have been in a hotel, to which he attributed the benefit of the heated bathroom mirror as the main reason. I have to agree, and every time I stay in (nice) hotel I always have a really good look at the bathroom with a view to reproducing the best of its features in my own home.

A demister mirror may be seen as a luxury item, but will add great effect to your bathroom, especially if you like showers for two!

In 1980, ska group The Beat had a UK top ten hit with ‘Mirror in the Bathroom’ and the bathroom is probably the location where we tend to study ourselves the most in mirrors. Many will say that it is not wise to look at yourself in the mirror first thing in the morning, but the bathroom is often the first port of call in the morning. Many bathrooms feature a main bathroom mirror positioned on a wall and a bathroom cabinet with mirror doors. Other than the “oh my god” do I really look like that expression, the uses of a mirror or mirrors in a bathroom will generally be to aid the application of make up, hair styling or shaving.

One of the major problems with bathroom mirrors is that after showering or bathing, the mirror is steamed up. A recent addition in the manufacture of heated mirrors is the inclusion of a demister pad which clears the mirror for use in mere seconds. Imagine never having to again wait for the steam of the bathroom to disappear from the mirror, or having to open the window, before using the mirror to shave or apply make up. The bathroom mirror demister or steam free bathroom mirror is a great invention. Some manufacturers refer to these products as fog free bathroom mirrors and there is now a huge range available, again some with back lights, LED lighting and built in shaver sockets.

Demister mirrors and steam free bathroom mirrors are not the only recent developments on mirrors. As suggested above another reasonably new product is the back lit bathroom mirror. Illuminated mirrors maintain the features of a simple mirror, but will enhance any environment in which they are used with the addition of lighting. As with all mirrors, the range of illuminated mirrors is extensive, with a variety of sizes and shapes available. An Illuminated mirror with shaving socket can also be purchased. Illuminated bathroom cabinets with or without shaver sockets are also available.

Mirrors with back lit LED lights will enhance any bathroom or environment in which they are installed. Being of low energy consumption LED, or light emitting diode, are more environmentally friendly than traditional bulbs. They are designed to withstand the dampness of the bathroom environment. So steam mist will not cause a problem. As a real luxury mirror, illuminated bathroom mirrors and bathroom mirrors with LED lighting can also include a demister pad, to demist the mirror in just a few seconds and an on/off sensor to activate the lights as soon as motion is detected in front of the mirror. Now bathroom cabinets are also available with inbuilt back lights, and LED lighting for that special something different in your bathroom.

As a bathroom accessory the mirror should come high on the list, in fact can you really have a finished bathroom without a mirror? The enormous selection of styles, types, shapes and sizes means that there must be a mirror to match anyone’s budget. Although some of the latest technological versions such as illuminated, back lit and LED mirrors could be considered to be luxury items, some are not as expensive as you may think.

Not sure what to buy for a wedding present? You can bet heated mirrors won’t be on the wedding present list and are always very well received, especially if the newlyweds like showers for two!

Mirrors, Superstition and Auspicious Energy Flow

I have always loved mirrors, probably why I have ended up in the mirrors business! When I was at school I did a project on them, this was before the internet was invented mind so I trawled through piles and piles of reference books in both the school and local library for months. These days of course it would only take a couple of hours on Google, kids these days don’t know how easy they’ve got it!

Once you get immersed in mirrors as I did all those years ago, or ‘mirros’ as I frequently misspelled it, and start researching them, you find that they play a major part in all aspects of life. Mirrors also feature in superstitions. One of the most commonly known superstitions is that someone who breaks a mirror will receive seven years bad luck. A popular belief for this superstition is that mirrors are a reflection of the soul and if a mirror is broken, then part of the soul is broken. Added to this, some believe that the soul regenerates every seven years in an unbroken condition, hence the seven years of bad luck. I bet you’ve always wondered what that was about so I’m glad to share that with you! Mirrors were often used in traditional witchcraft too as tools for performing spells from the belief that mirrors are said to be a reflection of the soul.

It is also said that the mirror does not lie. A mirror can show only the truth. It is a very bad omen indeed to see something in a mirror which should not be there! Some cultures also have a custom that a newborn child should not look into a mirror until its first birthday because its soul is still developing.

In the southern United States, it used to be customary to cover the mirrors in a house where the wake of a deceased person was being held. If a mirror was left uncovered or exposed, people believed that the deceased person’s soul would become trapped in any uncovered mirror. It was also thought that mirrors unexpectedly falling or mysteriously cracking were believed to be haunted.

Another superstition claims it is bad luck to have two mirrors facing each other. In the ancient art of Feng Shui mirror placement is considered very important. There is a lot of information available about this, and it is a subject that can’t be covered in a mere paragraph or two here. But Chi energy flow can be influenced by mirrors so where the energy needs to be reflected, mirrors can be used for this to great effect. Personally I don’t really follow these rules, although my mum has mirrors strategically placed all over her house to redirect in-auspicious energy! One of the principles I do follow though is to make sure I don’t have any mirrors facing my bed, or the kids beds, as this is said to reflect your dreams back onto you whilst you are sleeping, which is not a good thing if it’s a nightmare!

    Conclusion

A mirror is defined as a coated glass surface for reflecting images. There is a huge range of mirrors for domestic use, and available in many shapes and sizes. The most commonly seen uses of mirrors are for personal grooming and interior decoration. As a race we are thoroughly addicted to mirrors. Who can honestly say that they can walk past a mirror without taking a look at themselves?

Over time, mirrors have evolved from a luxury item to an item of necessity and many particularly women will always carry a mirror in their hand bags. However, today with technological advancements, some mirrors will be seen as a luxury, particularly those which include illumination, LED or demisting devices. As individuals we spend many hours of our life in a bathroom, so why not treat yourself to one of life’s little luxuries and indulge in a stylish bathroom mirror? After all, let’s be honest, who can really live without looking in a mirror at least once a day?

    Countdown to Retirement

It is that time in my life that I am thinking about retirement and where to relocate.

I am toggling back and forth with staying in the same area I live in now to be close to family and friends or move to a place with milder winters. A few weeks ago I visited a retirement community in my area and loved the layout and all the amenities. I was pretty sure I would mail in my application and deposit to get on their priority list.

Those thoughts only lasted a few days. Within a few days the weather changed to cold and damp and that triggered my memory about the reasons I should relocate to a warmer climate. My aching swollen knees. I have arthritis and the flare up is caused by dampness and cold. The summers here in the east are warm but humid and the swelling and pain flares up because of the humidity but I can escape the humidity into air conditioning. No matter what I ca not seem to escape the dampness in the fall and winter.

I found out recently massages and exercise seems to help but only for a short time. So once again New Mexico sounds really good. 350 days of sunshine in a dry climate sounds fantastic but I really will miss everyone here.

It is really disturbing to endure the effects of aging. I recall when I was younger how it bothered me to see someone close to me change dramatically with old age. I have very nice skin but even I can see an enormous change in my face from aging. I observe those same looks of concern in my kids faces that I had as a young person watching a loved one age. I hope the concern is enough that they will come visit in New Mexico when I move.
